7 Excel Formatting Tricks

Double Click Excel Format Painter

Format Painter is a great tool to easily copy Excel formatting from a cell or range of cells to another group of cells. To use Format Painter:

  • Select the cell or cells you want to copy the formatting from.
  • Click the Format Painter button from the Clipboard group on the Home tab.
  • Select the cell or cells you want that formatting to be applied to.

Once you get done applying the format to the new range of cells, Excel will “turn off” the Format Painter so you won’t apply the formatting to other cells you click on. This is particularly useful if you only want the format applied to one set of cells, and are forgetful like me!

However, there are times when you might need to apply the same format to many non-contiguous cells, or even across multiple worksheets. It would become extremely cumbersome if you had to keep clicking the Format Painter button for each new cell you wanted to format.

To prevent Excel from turning Format Painter off after the first click, use the same three steps shown above for the Format Painter. Except this time in the second step, double click the Format Painter button. You can then click as many cells as you want to apply the formatting with Format Painter without having to keep going back and clicking it.

To turn off Format Painter when you’re done just click the button again, or hit the Esc key.
